This is an excellent question. While magnanimity might be lacking, my point is that it is actually in Democratic Leader Jeffries own interest to take this action. The Minority in the House has very little power. Jeffries could magnify the power of the Minority by isolating the most extreme elements of the Republican Conference, and encouraging his more moderate Members to work to soften the legislation in question on bipartisan amendments. The reason those amendments will happen is because Democratic votes would be needed to offset the disaffected Republicans.
